Sea
sponges are one of the most natural and caring ways to cleanse,
massage and exfoliate your skin. Sea Sponges are highly
absorbent, create a luxurious lather, are softly textured
and are suitable for the most sensitive of skin. Sea sponges
are more durable and last longer than synthetic sponges
because they are more resistant to abrasion. In addition,
natural sea sponges are better for bathing and cleaning
because they soak up and hold more water without dripping.
Natural sponges are self-cleaning through their intricate
system of canals. Therefore they wash out more quickly and
easily and will not retain objectionable odors. They are
softer, clean better and will not peel like synthetic sponges
while being used. Natural Sea Sponges can be used for a
multitude of purposes: The application and removal of cosmetics,
Deep cleansing, Massaging to stimulate the circulatory system
and revitalise the skin, and for a luxurious bath and shower
experience. For bath and shower purposes we recommend the
Mediterranean Honeycomb sponge. To give an indication of
size, a good handful bath sponge is at least 6.5-7". For
general facial purposes we recommend the Mediterranean Fina
"silk" quality sponge or the Mediterranean Honeycomb sizes
2"-31/2". For cosmetic purposes, the Mediterranean Fina
"silk" quality sponges in small sizes 1"-21/2". Our sponges
have been gathered individually in a way which ensures that
the ocean beds continue to replenish themselves. Please
note: The brown-coloured sponges below are the sponges
in their natural colour, before bleaching. Although we usually
only stock the lighter-coloured bleached versions, we can
sometimes supply the natural colours if required.

Sea Wool
(Hippospongia Lachne)
The quality of Sea Wool sponges, which come from
the Bahamas, is not as high as Honeycomb and Fina
Silk Sponges. However, they are bulky in size and
fairly resilient.

Grass
(Spongia Gramminae)
Grass sponges are the least expensive natural sponges,
although generally considered better than their
synthetic alternatives.

More about sea sponges ...
To Ancient Greeks the sea sponge was known as a 'Zoofitan';
a unique category, meaning half plant/half animal. Today
many zoologists classify sea sponges in an animal sub-kingdom,
due to their hermaphroditic ability to reproduce. However,
they are distinct from any other animal species because
of their ability to also asexually reproduce and to regenerate
from a single cell. The sponge has neither brain nor central
nervous system and maintains many plant like qualities.
There are 5000 types of Natural Sea Sponges known to man,
only 7 of which are currently commercially traded. Sea sponges
big enough to use for bathing take from 2-20 years to grow,
depending on their size. Because sea sponges are picked
straight from the ocean bed their collection in the past
has raised concerns for the environment (people often mistake
the sea sponge for coral). Due to the nature of our business
these environmental issues are of great importance to us.
We are committed to the protection of the ecosystem surrounding
the sea beds in which our sponges are harvested. It is both
in our interest ethically and commercially to ensure that
there will be more sponges in the future than there are
today. All divers are registered fishermen who are closely
monitored. Sea sponges have the ability to regenerate themselves,
even from the smallest fragment, and the "roots" of every
harvested sponge are left intact to ensure they continue
to grow. Our individually harvested sea sponges are inspected
by the relevant Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and
certified for export. All raw sponges are processed in 42
stages by hand in the UK. All materials used in packaging
and processing are recycled and are recyclable. Sea Sponges
are hypo-allergenic and 100% biodegradable. |
